Balanced Attack Gives SPU Women Their 9th Straight Victory
February 4, 2006

Complete Box Score

LACEY, Wa. (Feb. 4) – Seniors Carli Grant and Jenny Poe both recorded double-doubles, and Seattle Pacific won its ninth straight game with a 76-48 victory over Saint Martin’s in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday night at the SMU Pavilion.

Grant (Sr., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian), the league’s all-time leading rebounder, finished with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the Falcons (10-1 GNAC, 16-4), and tied for the GNAC lead with seven double-doubles on the season. Poe (Sr., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa.) chipped in 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for her first career double-double.

SMU’s Beth Layton, the GNAC’s leading scorer, led all players with 19 points in the loss, but shot just 7-of-17 from the field. She was the only SMU player to score in double figures.

Jessie Menkens (Jr., 5-10, Battle Ground, Wa./Prairie) and Mandy Wood (Sr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) scored 12 points each to pace the Falcons, who have won by double figures in each game during their current winning streak.

In a tightly contested first half, SPU got three pointers from Menkens and Wood during an 8-0 run to take an 11-point lead midway through the opening frame. The Saints rallied back, however, to pull within five, but SPU scored the final six points of the half, the final four by Wood, to capture a double-digit lead (36-25) at the break.

The Falcons, who led by double figures throughout the entire second half, used a 13-0 run midway through the period to put the game away, capturing a 66-36 lead with 6:13 remaining.

Whitney Golob provided nine points and seven rebounds in the loss for SMU.

The Falcons shot 45 percent from the field and held Saint Martin’s to just 27 percent, as Seattle Pacific held an opponent to under 50 points for the second straight game and fourth time in the past five contests. SPU also shot 13-of-14 from the free-throw line and had a 54-34 advantage in rebounds. SPU’s bench outscored SMU’s 34-5

The Falcons complete a three-game road trip in Nampa, Id. next Saturday (Feb. 11) against Northwest Nazarene in a GNAC game at 6:00 p.m.
