Falcons Rally Late; Survive Scare From Anchorage Women
Grant Becomes Conference’s All-Time Leader in Rebounds

SEATTLE (Jan. 26) – Mandy Wood scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the second half to help lead host Seattle Pacific past upset-minded Alaska Anchorage 88-74 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Brougham Pavilion.

Anchorage (1-8 GNAC, 8-10) captured a three-point lead on a three pointer by Kelsey Larsen with six minutes left in the game, but Seattle Pacific (8-1 GNAC, 14-4) got six points apiece from Wood (Sr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) and Autumn Fielding (Jr., 5-9, Kennewick, Wa.) during an 18-0 run to pull ahead 85-70 with 1:39 left in the contest.

Seattle Pacific tallied its seventh straight win and 34th straight home victory.

Wood scored four of the first six points during the run, then Fielding followed with a pair of daggers, knocking down back-to-back treys. Fielding finished with a career-high 18 points, 13 of them in the second half, and matched her career best with six assists. Wood also had five assists and three steals.

Brittney Kroon (Sr., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) had a big game on both ends of the floor for the Falcons. She scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a season-high 11 shots. The national leader in blocks, Kroon came up just two shy of her school and conference record 13.

UAA’s Rebecca Kielpinski and Mari Riser matched Wood for game-high honors with 20 points each in the loss. Kielpinski also had nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.

SPU’s Carli Grant (Sr., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) finished with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds to move into first place all-time in the conference with 956 career rebounds. The previous record was 952.

The Falcons scored the first eight points of the game and built as much as a nine-point lead in the first half. After trailing by seven with seven minutes left in the first frame, the Seawolves went on a 20-2 run to capture an 11-point lead, their largest of the game, with two minutes left before the break. SPU scored eight straight to pull to within three at the intermission.

SPU got a pair of free throws from Fielding and a three pointer from Wood to open the second half and recapture the lead. SPU built a six-point cushion with 13:25 remaining, but Anchorage went on a 15-6 run to go up by three before Seattle Pacific strung together 18 unanswered points to put the game away.

After committing 16 turnovers that led to 20 UAA points, the Falcons coughed the ball up just eight times in the second half. Seattle Pacific shot 52 percent for the game and made 9-of-18 three pointers. SPU also went 19-for-21 from the foul line.

Anchorage shot 41 percent overall and 53 percent from behind the arc. The Falcons out-rebounded the Seawolves 41-29.

The Falcons begin a three-game road trip Thursday (Feb. 2) at Seattle University.
