Second-Half Power Surge Sends SPU Women Past Northwest Nazarene, 94-62

SEATTLE (Jan. 14) ­ Mandy Wood pumped in 13 of her 23 points in the second half as Seattle Pacific University pulled away from Northwest Nazarene for its third straight win, 94-62 over Northwest Nazarene in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Brougham Pavilion Saturday night.

Beth Christensen (So., 5-5, Enumclaw, Wa.) and Rachel Strand (Jr., Shoreline, Wa./King's) added 12 points apiece for the Falcons (4-1, 10-4), who won their 32nd straight home game.

Eight of Wood's (Sr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) points came during a power surge to start the second period. Seattle Pacific went on a 16-2 tear in the first five minutes to take a 53-33 lead.

Jenny Poe (Sr., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa.) converted three fastbreaks into layups during the run, and the bulge eventually grew to 37 points with five minutes remaining.

The Crusaders (3-2, 7-5) dropped their eight straight meeting with SPU. They were topped by Danielle Dwello's 14 points and 12 for Jessica Metz.

Wood connected on 5 of 6 three-pointers, including all three in the second half, when Seattle Pacific shot 62 percent as a team (21-34). For the game, Wood was 9-13 and SPU made 56 percent from the field.

Brittney Kroon (Sr., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) blocked six shots, five in the final period, and added nine rebounds and eight points.

Seattle Pacific out-rebounded NNU 49-29. The Crusaders made just 36 percent from the field.

The Falcons hit the road next week, beginning Thursday night at Humboldt State.
