SEATTLE (Jan. 7) Brittney Kroon led all
players with a season-high 15 points and eight blocked shots to
help lead Seattle Pacific to a 67-54 victory over Seattle
University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference womens
basketball game Saturday afternoon at Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons (3-1 GNAC, 9-4), ranked No 25 in
NCAA II, shut down the Redhawks (1-2 GNAC, 6-5) with a staunch
defense that allowed just 21 first-half points. SUs 54
points was the lowest by a SPU opponent this season.
Kroon (Sr., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) scored five of
SPUs first nine points to get the Falcons rolling early.
Seattle Pacific, which won its 31st straight game at home and 63rd
straight regular season home contest, held the Redhawks to just
four points through the first nine minutes to jump out to a
10-point lead. Kroon, who also grabbed six rebounds, led the
defense as well with nine points and four blocks in the first half
alone.
The Redhawks stopped the bleeding and narrowed
the gap to just three points. The Falcons then got a pair of
baskets from Kroon as part of a 10-0 run to grab their largest
lead of the half, 28-15, with 3:42 left in the first. SPU
maintained a 13-point advantage at the break.
The Falcons came out of the intermission on
fire. Jenny Poe (Sr., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa.) scored all six of her
second-half points as part of a 12-2 run to open the half to give
Seattle Pacific a 25-point cushion with 15:44 left to play. She
got all three buckets on fast break lay-ups. Six minutes later
Kroon gave SPU its largest lead of the game, 30 points, with a
pair of free throws.
Poe finished with nine points, six rebounds and
three assists. Mandy Wood (Sr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) was the
only other SPU player to score in double figures with 10 points
and five assists. Carli Grant (Sr., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley
Christian) scored seven points and grabbed a game-high 12
rebounds.
SUs Jackie Thomas scored all eight of her
points in the second half in a reserve role to help spark a late
Redhawk rally. Seattle University cut the deficit to 11 with just
under a minute left to play, but that was as close as the Redhawks
would get.
Kamrica Ary-Turner led SU with 13 points in 24
minutes off the bench. She shot 5-for-9 from the field and 3-for-3
from three-point range. Laura Jones led the SU starters with nine
points.
The Falcons shot 43 percent and held an
opponent under 60 points for the first time this season. The
Redhawks shot just 36 percent for the game, but hit 5-of-10 three
pointers. The Falcons went 15-for-21 from the free-throw line and
held the Redhawks to just three free-throw attempts.
The Falcons complete a three-game home stand
next Saturday when they host Northwest Nazarene in a GNAC game at
5:00 p.m..
