ARCATA, Calif. (Jan. 7) Mike Bushmaker
and Dustin Bremerman combined for 50 points as 6th-ranked Seattle
Pacific University overpowered Humboldt State in the second half
for a 97-87 victory at East Gym to earn a share of first place in
the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
It was the sixth straight win for the Falcons
(3-0, 11-1), who matched their best start. They are unbeaten
against NCAA Division II opposition. The sole loss was at Nevada.
Bushmaker (Sr., 6-7, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower)
scored 12 of his career-high 27 points in the second half and
Bremerman (Jr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) supplied 15 of his 23
in the first period. Both converted 9 of 11 shots from the field.
Seattle Pacific shot 62 percent and, after
taking the lead late in the first half, pushed the margin to 22
points before a late Lumberjacks (2-2, 8-4) charge. SPU has made
over 60 percent of its field goals and averaged over 103 points in
the last three outings.
Tony Binetti (Sr., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) scored
15 second-half points for SPU, which made 19 of 25 shots in the
period. Jeff Knudson (Sr., 6-7, Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak) added a
season-high 12 points, hitting 3-4 three pointers.
With five different players contributing
baskets, the visitors went on a 13-2 tear which carried over into
the start of the final period. That put Seattle Pacific in front
47-36.
Later, Knudson drilled a three-pointer and
Binetti capped a streak of nine unanswered points for an 82-60
advantage with 5:40 left.
Humboldt State rallied, cutting the lead to
eight with 68 seconds left but three consecutive free throws by
Bushmaker (one) and Binetti (two) secured the verdict.
Kevin Johnson scored 23 points for the Jacks
and Grayson Moyer had 20.
Seattle Pacific shot 9-19 outside the arc, with
Bremerman going 4-6. Behind Bushmaker and Knudson, the reserves
accounted for 44 points.
SPU is tied with Western Washington atop the
GNAC. Four other seasons started with an 11-1 mark, with 2001-02
the most recent.
After playing eight of their first 12 on the
road, the Falcons now host six of the next eight at Brougham
Pavilion, beginning Thursday night against Alaska Anchorage.
