ELLENSBURG, Wa. (Dec. 29) Jackie
Hollands was one of five Falcons in double figures and scored all
10 of her points in the first half to help Seattle Pacific jump
out to a big lead early and an 80-67 victory over host Central
Washington in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for
both teams.
The Wildcats (0-1 GNAC, 5-3) scored the first
basket of the game, but that was their only lead as No. 14 Seattle
Pacific (1-0 GNAC, 7-3) took control early.
Hollands (So., 5-9, Oregon City, Or.) hit a
three pointer midway through the first half to cap off a 13-4 SPU
run and give the Falcons a 10-point lead, 25-15, the first double
digit lead of the contest. The Falcons led by 13 at the half.
The Falcons maintained a double-digit lead
throughout the first eight minutes of the second half, but Central
slowly chipped away at the lead. The Wildcats pulled to within
seven with nine minutes left in the game, but SPU leading scorer
Mandy Wood (Sr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) took matters into her own
hands.
Wood buried a pair of three pointers and scored
a lay-up to spark a 14-2 run that gave the Falcons their largest
lead of the game, 77-58, with four minutes left to play.
Wood finished with a team-high 15 points and
five assists. Autumn Fielding (Jr., 5-9, Kennewick, Wa.) added 13
points in the win. Carli Grant (Sr., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley
Christian) and Kelsey Hill (Fr., 6-2, Portland, Or./Portland
Christian) joined Hollands with 10 points apiece. Hill grabbed a
team-high seven rebounds, and Grant hauled in six boards.
CWUs Jamie Corwin led all players with 16
points in the loss. Laura Wright added 13 points and eight
rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench. Hanna Hull chipped in with
13 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Falcons shot 53.2 percent from the field,
their second best performance of the season. SPU was also 7-for-16
(43.8 percent) from three-point range. Central shot just 41.5
percent from the field and 36.4 percent from behind the arc.
The Falcons travel to Bellingham on New Years
Eve for a national showdown and GNAC counter against No. 7 Western
Washington. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
