No. 5 SPU Men Outlast Pomona for Third Straight Win
December 21, 2005

Complete Box Score

POMONA, Ca. (Dec. 21) – Dustin Bremerman scored the final four points of the game as Seattle Pacific turned a one-point deficit into a 69-66 men's basketball victory over Cal Poly Pomona on the road Wednesday night at CPP’s Kellogg Gym.

The host Broncos (4-4) captured a one-point lead, just their second of the half with two minutes left in the game. Bremerman (Jr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower), however, responded with a basket on SPU’s next possession to put the Falcons back on top. He grabbed the rebound on two of Pomona’s next three possessions, all missed field goals, and iced the game with a pair of free throws with a second remaining.

Seattle Pacific (8-1), ranked No. 5 in NCAA II, is off to its best start under fourth-year head coach Jeff Hironaka. The Falcons have won three straight and suffered their only loss to Division I Nevada.

Bremerman tied teammate Tony Binetti (Sr., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) with a game-high 20 points. He shot 6-for-11 from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line, including the two clinchers from the charity stripe. Binetti cashed in on 5-of-7 three-point attempts.

Kevin Neveu led four Broncos in double figures with 13 points and led all players with seven rebounds. Dion Cook added 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in the loss.

Mike Bushmaker (Sr., 6-7, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) was the only other SPU player in double figures. He had 10 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench.

Statistically, the game was even across the board other than SPU’s heavy advantage in three-point shooting. The Falcons shot 44.4 percent from the field, and Pomona shot 45.5 percent. But SPU was 8-for-21 (38.1 percent) from behind the arc, while Pomona made just 3-of-13 (23.1 percent).

The Falcons are off for 10 days until New Year ’s Eve. SPU host Northwest Nazarene in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams Dec. 31 at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon.
