SEATTLE (Dec. 3) Tony Binetti scored 11
of his game-high 19 points in the second half to lead Seattle
Pacific to a 69-54 victory over Hawaii Pacific in a non-conference
mens basketball game Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons (5-0), ranked No. 11 in NCAA II,
remained perfect on the season. The Sea Warriors (0-4) are still
in search of their first victory.
The Falcons, who led by four at halftime,
scored seven straight points early in the second half to turn a
three-point advantage into their first double-digit lead of the
contest. From there, Binetti (Sr., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) responded
to HPUs comeback attempts with several daggers.
The Sea Warriors climbed back to within seven
with 14:35 left to play, but Binetti buried his only three pointer
of the game to put the Falcons back on top by 10. SPU kept its
lead in double figures for the next 10 minutes, but Hawaii Pacific
pulled back to within eight, 55-47, with 3:20 remaining.
Binetti answered again, scoring a lay-up to put
the Falcons on top 57-47. He later sealed the win with a pair of
free throws to give SPU a 65-51 lead with 1:06 left on the clock.
Binetti also had five rebounds, seven assists and three steals in
the victory.
Dustin Bremerman (Jr., 6-4, Yakima,
Wa./Eisenhower) was the only other Falcon in double figures with
15 points. Robbie Will (So., 6-10, Seattle/ODea) added seven
points, six rebounds and six blocked shots.
Adam Reinking paced Hawaii Pacific with 11
points and eight rebounds. Donnel Dobbins added 11 points and four
assists in 25 minutes off the bench. Audrius Peciukas also
flourished in a reserve role for HPU with seven points and a
game-high 11 rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.
Hawaii Pacific captured an early 6-2 lead and
led 15-11 midway through the first half. Chad Williams (Sr., 6-8,
Burlington, Wa./Burlington-Edison) drained his only trey of the
game and Binetti scored six of his eight first-half points during
an 11-0 run that turned a 19-17 deficit into a 28-19 SPU lead.
The Sea Warriors responded with eight straight
points to pull back within one with 3:20 left in the first half,
but SPU never gave up the lead throughout the remainder of the
game and got baskets from Binetti and Brian Lynch (Jr., 6-1,
Missoula, Mt./Great Falls) to capture a 32-28 lead at the break.
The Sea Warriors had a dominant 47-30 advantage
in rebounds, including 18-5 on the offensive glass. The Falcons,
however, shot 43 percent from the field and held HPU to just 32
percent shooting, including a dismal 4-for-15 from three-point
rage. The Falcons also scored 15 points off 21 Hawaii Pacific
turnovers.
The Falcons begin a four-game road trip
beginning Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Nevada at 7:00 p.m.
