SEATTLE (Nov. 19) Shannon Lovejoy buried
the decisive penalty kick in the left corner of the net as Seattle
Pacific University edged defending NCAA Division II women's soccer
champion Metro State (Co.) 5-4 in a shootout of a quarterfinal
playoff Saturday at Interbay Stadium.
The unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Falcons (19-0-4)
will next play in the semifinal round, Dec. 1 in Wichita Falls,
Tx. The Roadrunners (23-0-1), who entered the game ranked No. 1 in
the nation, saw a 46-game win streak snapped, with the outcome
officially recorded as a 0-0 tie.
In a game in which neither team could score a
goal in 110 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods,
Seattle Pacific could not be stopped from the penalty spot.
Tricia Loomis, Heidi Jacobson, Megan Lienhard,
Kara Hamby and Lovejoy converted in succession for the Falcons.
The Roadrunners' sole miss was from Kylee Hanavan in the second of
the five rounds. She steered her kick just past the left post.
"I played my heart out and
there's nothing more I could do, but take one more shot,"
said Lovejoy of her thoughts before attempting the final
tiebreaker.
"Metro is the best we've played;
they gave us a great game," said Seattle Pacific coach Chuck
Sekyra. "I told the team at halftime that we're not here to
survive, we were here to win."
Before the tiebreaker, SPU had largely
controlled possession, peppering the Metro goal with 20 shots
compared to the visitors' nine.
Jacobson and Sarah Martinez produced the best
clear scoring chances. In the 83rd minute, Jacobson took a cutback
pass from Martinez and fired just over the upper right corner.
Six minutes into the second sudden-death
overtime period, Lovejoy put Martinez clear in the box, but Metro
goalkeeper Rachel Zollner managed to push a 14-yard drive by
Martinez around the left post.
Metro's Hanavan, who came into the game with 30
goals, cracked a 15-yard shot in the 30th minute which sailed past
the right post.
Jennifer Burns saved four Metro shots,
silencing the nation's top-ranked attack (97 goals). It was her
eighth shutout and the team's 13th. Zollner had three saves for
the visitors.
The Falcons will be making their first
semifinal appearance in the program's five-year existence. They
will meet the winner of Sunday's game between Carson-Newman (Tn.)
and West Florida. The national championship game is Dec. 3.
