Martinez, Jacobson Among Seven Falcons to Make All-GNAC Women's Soccer Team
Martinez named Player of Year; Lovejoy only second player in GNAC history to earn first team all-conference honors four seasons
November 8, 2005

SEATTLE (Nov. 8) Sarah Martinez of playoff-bound Seattle Pacific University was voted the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer player of the year, and Chuck Sekyra earned coach of the year honors for the third straight season.

In addition, the Falcons' Heidi Jacobson (Sr., Kirkland, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) was one of two unanimous selections and Shannon Lovejoy (Jr., Seattle, Wa./Seattle Prep) became only the second player in GNAC history to earn first team all-conference honors each of her four seasons. Altogether seven SPU players made the first and second teams.

Seattle Pacific placed five players on the GNAC first team all-stars and two more on the second team. Five more received honorable mention.

The undefeated Falcons (17-0-3) won their fourth straight conference championship last week and are ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II. They host the Far West regional tournament beginning Thursday at Interbay Stadium.

Martinez (5-6, So., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) currently leads the conference in scoring with 33 points, including 14 goals and five assists, and in game-winning goals with four. She has scored six goals in her last five games.

Martinez made the first team for the second year in a row. Lovejoy, last year's player of the year, joins Tafara Pulse (2001-04) of Seattle University as the only four-time selection in GNAC history.

Jacobson, whose 11 goals is second only to Martinez in the conference, was one of two unanimous first team selections, along with Leah Wymer of SU.

Also voted to the first team were midfielder Kara Hamby (So., Spokane, Wa./Mead) and defender Carolyn Nason (Jr., Lafayette, Co./Broomfield).

Included in the second team were forward Megan Lienhard (Sr., Everett, Wa./Cascade) and defender Michelle Everson (Sr., Tacoma, Wa./Stadium).

Sekyra has not lost a conference game since taking the helm in 2003. His team won their fourth straight GNAC title despite replacing four starters from a year ago.

Humboldt State midfielder Ellie Magdaleno was the freshman of the year and Western Washington's Rosie Zadra was the top newcomer.
