No. 2 SPU Women's Soccer Team Uses Balanced Scoring Attack to Shut Out SU
November 5, 2005

Complete Box Score

Seattle, Wa. (Nov. 5)—Allison Teague, Shannon Lovejoy and Sarah Martinez hit net as Seattle Pacific University shut out Seattle University 3-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer match Saturday night at Interbay Stadium.

Fresh off winning their fourth outright conference title Wednesday night, the Falcons (17-0-3/10-0-2) added another tally to each of their unbeaten streaks. Seattle Pacific has not lost a regular season match in its last 57 tries (52-0-5), and has not dropped a GNAC match in 44 straight contests (40-0-4).

The Redhawks (13-5-2/7-3-2) out-shot SPU 8-5 in the first half, but the Falcons opened scoring when Allison Teague (Sr., Redmond, Wa./Bellevue Christian/Santa Clara) touched a cross from Tricia Loomis (So., Des Moines, Wa./Mount Rainier) to the left post from six yards. Loomis began the play by beating an SU defender on a long run down the right sideline.

Loomis drove toward the end line and stopped just short to chip the ball across the goalmouth. Sandwiched between two Redhawk defenders, Megan Lienhard (Sr., Everett, Wa./Cascade) attempted to finish with a diving header but couldn’t reach the ball. Teague trailed the play and one-touched Loomis’ cross past Redhawk keeper Ashley Angerer at 35:55. SPU went into the locker room at intermission with a 1-0 lead.

Despite the first half defecit, Seattle Pacific matched the Redhawks’ eight second half shots as it increased its attack potency. Just over ten minutes in, Shannon Lovejoy (Sr., Seattle, Wa./Seattle Prep.) tapped a Meredith Teague (Fr., Redmond, Wa./Bellevue Christian) corner-kick into SU’s net from point blank range. Teague’s kick curled toward the goal line, and Angerer was unable to control a wet ball (56:35).

Sarah Martinez (So., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) shored up scoring in the 67th-minute when she stripped a defender in the attacking third and capitalized on a one-on-one with Angerer. The sophomore has a team high14 goals and 33 points on the season.

Seattle University out-shot the Falcons 16-13 on the night, but was unable to come up with a scoring equation as SPU keeper Jennifer Burns stopped a season high seven balls. Angerer registered a pair of saves. Corner-kicks were dead even at four apiece.

The Falcons anxiously await Monday’s NCAA tournament pairings. Seattle Pacific is currently the top seed in the Far West Region, and is looking to secure its third straight trip to the NCAA Division II tournament. First round games are slated for Nov. 10 at a site to be determined.

Seattle Pacific closes out its regular season unbeaten for the second year in a row.
