SEATTLE (Nov. 5) James Coggan's header with 30
minutes remaining was the difference as 5th-ranked Seattle Pacific
University edged men's soccer defending national champion Seattle
University 1-0 Saturday, assuring the Falcons of a berth in the
NCAA Division II tournament .
Kellen Rosten (So., Colorado Springs, Co.)
saved a penalty kick less than two minutes prior to the goal,
turning the tide for SPU (14-2-3), which won the Caffe D'Arte
Coffee Cup before a rain-soaked crowd at Interbay Stadium for the
Great Northwest Athletic Conference game.
Seattle Pacific, ranked No. 2 in the region, is
chasing Cal State Dominguez Hills for the top seed in next week's
regional tournament. The Toros, who defeated SPU Sept. 10, play
for the CCAA championship Sunday.
Coggan (So., San Jose, Ca.) beat Redhawks
keeper Chris Sorensen to a high free kick from Matt Kemper (So.,
Colorado Springs, Co.) at midfield. When Coggan made contact, the
ball skimmed off his head and into an open net from 10 yards at
60:36. It was his fifth goal of the season, all coming as a
non-starter.
Seattle U. (13-6-0) was on the verge of taking
the lead moments before. Cameron Weaver was brought down just
inside the box and Alex Chursky was awarded a penalty kick. Rosten
guessed correctly, diving to his right to block Chursky's shot.
Weaver rushed in for the rebound but his drive sailed high over
the crossbar.
Both teams hit the goal frame. Coggan was on
the end of a Ross Vaillancourt cross in the 55th minute, but his
6-yard kick caromed off the crossbar.
In the 87th minute, the Redhawks' Adam Jensen
headed a free kick off the left post.
Seattle Pacific finished the regular season
undefeated (8-0-1) at home, and it is now unbeaten in its last 26
games (24-0-2) when scoring first. The Falcons ended a nine-game
winless drought vs. Seattle U., dating back to 2001.
Rosten made eight saves to earn his 10th
shutout and the team's 12th in 19 games. Besides the penalty, he
also made a lunging stop on a 30-yard free kick by Bobby McAlister
in the first half.
SPU will earn one of three berths in the Far
West Regional. The tournament site and bracket will be announced
Monday. Games will begin Nov. 10.
The Redhawks, who entered the week ranked No. 4
in the Far West, still have faint hopes of landing the third and
final spot. They finished with a 15-13 edge in shots but the hosts
held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
