PHOENIX (Oct. 27) Colin Rigby came off
the bench to score the deciding goal in the second half as
6th-ranked Seattle Pacific University won for the fourth time in
five games, 2-1 over Grand Canyon Thursday night in a
non-conference men's soccer game.
The Falcons (11-2-3) also got an early goal
from Jeff Hallenbeck (So., Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor) as they resumed
play following a 13-day break. The win improved their chances of
qualifying for the NCAA Division II tournament next month and
snapped the Antelopes' five-game win streak.
Some deft dribbling by Nick Letts (Sr., Dublin,
Ca.) created the game-winner in the 70th minute. Letts, also a
substitute, beat two defenders down the right wing, drew the
Canyon keeper off his goal line and then cut the ball back along
the 6-yard box. Rigby (Jr., Mercer Island, Wa.) tapped into an
empty net for his second goal of the year.
Seattle Pacific is undefeated (22-0-2) in its
last 24 games when scoring first, and Hallenbeck gave the visitors
a lead after 4 minutes. Working an exchange with Michael Morris
(Jr., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet), Hallenbeck pounded home a 12-yard
shot for his third goal in the last two games and fifth overall.
Grand Canyon (8-8-2) drew level through David
Hague in the 14th minute. The Antelopes applied plenty of pressure
in the final stages, earning four of their seven corner kicks in
the last two minutes.
Kellen Rosten (So., Colorado Springs, Co.), SPU
goalkeeper, cleanly saved a strong header by Andrew Bailey in the
final minute to preserve the victory.
SPU, currently No. 2 in the Far West Region and
seeking one of three slots in the NCAA tournament, meets Cal State
Monterey Bay in Phoenix Saturday night.
