BELLINGAHAM, Wash. (Oct. 22) Paced by Meredith Crane's runner-up finish, 13th-ranked Seattle Pacific University won its second Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's cross country title in three years Saturday at Lake Padden Park.

The Falcons, with four harriers among the top 12, finished 17 points ahead of Alaska Anchorage for their eighth conference crown overall. In it bid to repeat as men's champion, SPU was fourth, but only nine points out of second place.

Crane (Jr., Yakima, Wa./Davis), who had won a meet on the same 6000-meter race course two weeks ago, was eclipsed by Pavla Havlova of Alaska Fairbanks. Havlova crossed the line in 22 minutes, 15 seconds. Crane was timed in 22:3240 seconds off her pace at the Western Washington Invitational.

Crane had won her last two races and three of four during the regular season. Her team remains unbeaten against NCAA opposition.

Seattle Pacific totaled 54 points, with Mary Moriarty (Fr., Seattle, Wa./Ballard) running seventh (23:11) to earn GNAC freshman of the year and joining Crane on the al-conference team. Josie Lavin (Sr., Bremerton, Wa./Bremerton) and Karin Rohde (So., Bellingham, Wa./Mount Baker) took 11th and 12th, respectively, in 23:26 and 23:31. Carlo Lozano (So., Seattle, Wa./Blanchet) was the Falcons' top scorer, just missing the all-conference cut by placing 11th in 26:42. Brian Cronrath (So., Battle Ground, Wa.) was 14th in 26:48 and Bjorn Bostrom (Jr., La Conner, Wa./Bellingahm) 17th in 26:55. Humboldt State, which was forced to drive from Arcata, Ca., Friday due to the fog-caused closure of the Eureka airport, edged SPU for third place, 91-97.
