SEATTLE (Oct. 15) Alyssa Given had a
match-high 16 kills and 10 digs to lead red-hot Seattle Pacific to
its fourth straight victory, a 3-0 sweep of Western Oregon in a
Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday
night at Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons (9-2 GNAC, 15-5), ranked No. 18 in
NCAA II, overcame early deficits in all three games before putting
away the Wolves (6-5, 8-11) 30-25, 30-20, 30-24. Seattle Pacific
has swept all four opponents during its current win streak and has
won eight straight matches at home. The Falcons have also won 10
straight home GNAC matches dating back to last season, the past
nine by 3-0 sweeps.
Given (So., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) got
off to a slow start, but heated up with nine kills in Game 2 alone
to help SPU take a commanding lead in the match. She finished with
a .350 hitting percentage. Whitney Dibble (Jr., 6-1, Reno,
Nv./Galena) was the only other player in double figures with 11
kills on .556 hitting in the victory.
SPU grabbed a comfortable 22-12 lead on a block
by Rachel Biornstad (So., 6-0, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) and Angie
Wodrich (So., 5-10, Richland, Wa.), but had to fend off a fierce
comeback by the Wolves. Western Oregon scored seven straight
points, but never got closer than three as SPU closed the game
with two straight points.
The Wolves scored the first three points of
Game 2, but SPU broke a 10-10 tie with three straight points to
capture the lead for good and later went on an 8-2 run to pull
ahead 22-14. Western Oregon blocked four straight SPU attacks to
score the first four points of the third frame, The Falcons evened
the game at 5-5 and captured the lead for good with three straight
points midway through to pull ahead 15-12.
Biornstad finished with seven kills and five
blocks in the win. Wodrich added nine kills, nine digs and two
blocks. Setter Jenna Von Moos (Jr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) had a
match-high 38 assists and 10 digs.
Katrina Johnson led the Wolves with nine kills
and four blocks. Stacie Matz added eight kills in the loss. Shawn
Paulino chipped in six kills, 22 assists and 17 digs.
WOUs Laura Sakala led all players with
six blocks as the Wolves stole one of SPUs greatest
strengths. The Falcons, who lead the GNAC and rank 15th nationally
in blocking, normally enjoy a sizeable advantage in that category,
but were out-blocked 11-6 by the Wolves.
SPU, however, held Western Oregon to a .045
hitting percentage, including a negative figure in Game 3. The
Falcons hit at a .194 clip.
The Falcons head north for a pair of GNAC
matches in Alaska beginning Thursday at Alaska Fairbanks at 8:00
p.m. before returning home the following week for their final two
regular season home matches.
