Complete Box Score

SEATTLE (Oct. 13) – Rachel Biornstad had a match-high 14 kills, and the Falcon defense lived up to its reputation as Seattle Pacific swept Humboldt State 3-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (8-2 GNAC, 14-5), ranked No. 18 in NCAA II, recorded their seventh straight win at home and third overall with the 30-17, 30-17, 30-17 victory. It also marked SPU’s ninth straight home GNAC victory dating back to last season. The past eight wins have been sweeps, as the Falcons have won 30 straight games during the streak. Humboldt State dropped to 3-7 in the GNAC and 7-11 overall.

The win also moved SPU into sole possession of third place in the conference ahead of idle Western Washington (7-2) and just a fraction of percentage points behind Central Washington (8-1) who was also idle. Seattle University (9-1) took over sole possession of first place with a victory tonight to stay one win ahead of SPU.

Biornstad (So., 6-0, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) smashed four kills during a key 8-0 run in Game 1 that turned a 15-13 SPU lead into a 10-point advantage. After breaking open a relatively close first game, the Falcons dominated the rest of the way. SPU jumped out to a 12-3 lead in Game 2 and captured an 8-3 lead early in the third frame, and later extended that to a 20-9 cushion.

The only player to finish with double figures in kills, Biornstad had eight kills in the first game alone, which was more than any other players’ final total other than teammate Chelsey Myers (Sr., 5-10, Minden, Nv./Douglas), who slammed home nine kills. Biornstad recorded a .462 hitting percentage and also had three blocks.

For the second time in three matches, the Falcons kept an opponent from hitting in positive figures. Seattle Pacific forced Humboldt into 23 errors. The Lumberjacks had just 23 kills for a zero hitting percentage.

GNAC individual leader Whitney Dibble (Jr., 6-1, Reno, Nv./Galena) had a match-high four blocks, and Torii Mount (Fr., 5-2, Gresham, Or.) a match-high 24 digs to lead the defensive effort. Dibble also had seven kills and hit at a .400 clip. Setter Jenna Von Moos (Jr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) added four kills on .44 hitting, 37 assists, 16 digs and three blocks. Seattle Pacific finished with 10 blocks as a team.

Mallory Briney led the Jacks with seven kills and three block assists in the loss. Kristen Kinzer added five kills, and Maya Domoto tallied a team-high 17 digs.

The Falcons complete a four-match home stand against Western Oregon in GNAC action Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
