October 8, 2005

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE (Oct. 8) – Chelsey Myers had a season-high 20 kills on a .425 hitting percentage to lead nationally ranked Seattle Pacific to a 3-0 sweep of cross-city rival Seattle University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (7-2 GNAC, 13-5), ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II, handed the Redhawks (8-1 GNAC, 10-9) their first conference loss of the season 30-28, 30-28, 30-27. The Falcons also ended SU’s school-record nine-match win streak and snapped a five-match losing streak to the Redhawks. The Falcons pulled to within one win of Seattle University and Central Washington for first place in the GNAC.

Myers (Sr., 5-10, Minden, Nv./Douglas) sparked the Falcons early in an intense battle. She tallied nine kills in Game 1 on just 11 attacks for a .818 hitting percentage. Seattle Pacific finished with a .262 hitting percentage as a team and held Seattle to .232 hitting.

The Redhawks led 17-14 in the first game, but Myers smashed two consecutive kills to cap a three-point rally to pull the Falcons even. She later gave SPU its first lead of the game, 19-18, and broke a 27-27 tie with her final kill of the game.

Neither team built more than a five-point lead as the pesky Redhawks did not go down without a fight. SU scored the first two points of Game 2, but SPU rallied to build a 21-17 lead. The Falcons then went up 29-26, but SU fended off two-game points before Alyssa Given (So., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) ended the rally with a kill.

The Falcons gave away the first three points of Game 3, but battled back to pull ahead 11-10 and extended that to a 14-11 advantage. The Falcons built their biggest lead of the night, 29-24, but again the Redhawks did no go away quietly. SU fought off attack after attack in two of the longest rallies of the evening and scored three straight points to pull within two, 29-27, but Whitney Dibble (Jr., 6-1, Reno, Nv./Galena) finished the match with a spike down the middle.

Given finished with 14 kills, 17 digs and three block assists. Rachel Biornstad (So., 6-0, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) added nine kills and three blocks. Dibble finished with five kills and four blocks.

SPU setter Jenna Von Moos (Jr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) had four kills, 48 assists and nine digs in the win. Angie Wodrich (So., 5-10, Richland, Wa.) chipped in seven kills and 12 digs. Torii Mount (Fr., 5-2, Gresham, Or.) led all players with 25 digs.

SU’s Sarah Sommerman matched Myers with a team-high 20 kills in the loss. Nikole Thompson added 15 kills and 11 digs. Jenny Burrows had 10 kills, and Marisa Vierra finished with 48 assists in the loss.

The Falcons next host Humboldt State in a GNAC match Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
