SEATTLE (Oct. 8) A seven-game unbeaten
string was snapped as the 9th-ranked Seattle Pacific University
men's soccer team fell to arch-rival Seattle University 2-1 in a
Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at Championship Field
Saturday afternoon.
Cam Weaver and Bobby McAlister gave the
defending NCAA Division II champions at 2-0 lead midway through
the second half before Daniel Carpenter came off the bench for the
Falcons' goal in the 90th minute.
It was only the second loss of the season for
SPU (1-1-1/9-2-3), which had not lost since Sept. 10. Seattle U.
(3-0-0/9-4-0) continued its run of success in the intracity
series, winning the fifth meeting in a row, all by a one-goal
margin.
Santa Maria Rivera, who caused problems
throughout the first half with his overlapping on the left, set-up
the game's first goal by cross for the onrushing Weaver to bang
home a shot at the far post in the 17th minute. It ended a streak
of 532 scoreless minutes by the Falcons' defense over six games.
The Redhawks out-shot the visitors 10-3 in the
first half and 23-12 overall. Weaver got off 10 shots altogether.
He hit the crossbar on a volley in the 78th minute. Kellen Rosten
(So., Colorado Springs, Co.) was credited with 10 saves.
Coming out strong to begin the second period,
Seattle Pacific became the aggressor and appeared to be on the
verge of knotting the score when Jeff Hallenbeck found Ross
Vaillancourt in the box, only to have SU keeper Chris Sorensen
smother the ball at his feet. Moments later, McAlister beat two
defenders and cracked a shot past Rosten and into the right corner
at 63:32.
Carpenter notched his fourth goal of the year
just 34 seconds from full time, ramming the ball home out of a
scramble following a corner kick.
SPU hosts Notre Dame de Namur in a
non-conference game Friday night at 7.
