SEATTLE (Oct. 1) Michael Morris scored
the earliest goal in Seattle Pacific University history and the
9th-ranked Falcons extended their unbeaten streak to seven games
by beating Simon Fraser 2-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game
at Interbay Stadium Saturday night.
A goal by Ross Vaillancourt (Sr., Bedford, NH)
late in the second half clinched the victory for SPU (9-1-3),
which has not allowed a goal in its last seven home games and four
games overall. Kellen Rosten (So., Colorado Springs, Co.) made two
second-half saves to earn his seventh shutout and the team's
ninth.
Morris (Jr., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet) put Seattle
Pacific ahead 1-0 after just 13 seconds, erasing a record of 0:23
which was set in 1990 by Brad Owen. On the first foray after the
opening kickoff, Jeff Hallenbeck (So., Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor)
served the ball in from the left side of the box and Morris took
the ball off the bounce and pounded it past the near post.
Vaillancourt scored in his second straight
game, drilling an 18-yard shot through traffic after Steve
Spencer's corner kick in the 78th minute from 5 yards.
Prior to the second goal, Simon Fraser (8-2-1),
ranked No. 6 in NAIA, had applied heavy pressure. Andrew Corazza
forced Rosten down to his right for a save in the 75th minute and
moments later Vincent Stewart's 20-yard free kick glanced off the
right post.
Both teams hit the woodwork midway through the
first period. Nick Letts unleashed a 12-yeard try off the right
post and Lucas Barrett's 18-yard blast on the end of a quick
counterattack hit the underside of the crossbar in the 26th
minute.
The Falcons finished with a 9-5 advantage in
corner kicks but were out-shot by the Clansmen 15-13.

play next Saturday at Seattle University.
