overtime penalty kick lifted nationally second-ranked Seattle
Pacific University to its 11th consecutive victory as it defeated
Western Washington 2-1 OT, in a Great Northwest Athletic
Conference womens soccer match Wednesday night at Interbay
Stadium.
The Falcons (11-0-0/4-0-0) upped their regular
season unbeaten streak to 48 matches with the win (46-0-2).
Western Washington slipped to 5-3-0/2-1-0 overall. In GNAC play,
Seattle Pacific is undefeated in its last 36 outings (34-0-2).
Lovejoy (Sr., Seattle, Wa.) ended the match in
the 97th minute by beating Western Washington keeper Theresa Fish
to the left post off a penalty kick. The senior midfielder
registered her eighth assist of 2005, in the first half on a
through-ball to Samantha Hufford (Jr., Sammamish, Wa.); Hufford
finished to the left post from 16 yards at 34:59.
Westerns Katie Warner put the game to
overtime with 33-seconds left to play, with a 22-yard blank over
the top of Burns outstretched hands. Warner had won the ball
amidst a scramble near the top of the box.
The Falcons Jennifer Burns (Fr., Boise,
Id.) registered four tough saves in goal. In the 13th minutes,
Burns smothered a point blank shot from the foot of Westerns
Rosie Zadra, who had broken away from the SPU defense from near
mid-field. Zadra finished the match with a team-high three shots.
Fish batted off eight balls for the Vikings,
who despite controlling the ball the greater part of the second
half, were out-shot 10-11. The corner-kick ratio was dead even at
two apiece.
Seattle Pacific is idle for seven days before
beginning a string of three straight road games October 5, at
Central Washington. Kick-off is scheduled for 3PM.
