SEATTLE (Sept. 28) Andy Willis scored
his eighth goal of the season and 9th-ranked Seattle Pacific
University posted its sixth straight home shutout with a 3-0 Great
Northwest Athletic Conference soccer win over Western Washington
Wednesday at Interbay Stadium.
The Falcons (1-0-1/8-1-3) also got goals from
Ross Vaillancourt (Sr., Bedford, NH) and Jeff Hallenbeck (So.,
Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor) in stretching their unbeaten streak to six
games overall and nine at home.
Willis (Jr., Gig Harbor, Wa.) opened the
scoring early, taking a ball on the run from James Coggan (So.,
San Jose, Ca.) and drilling an 18-yard shot into the left corner
at 7:09. Midway through the first half, Willis fired off the legs
of Vikings keeper Ben Dragavon but a WWU defender cleared the ball
off the goal line.
After Western Washington's Robbie Curry skimmed
the crossbar with a free kick in the 33rd minute, SPU struck
again. Vaillancourt collected a clearance at the top of the box
and ripped a low drive inside the left post at 41:32 for a 2-0
lead.
The only goal of the second half came on a
penalty kick by Hallenbeck in the 55th minute, after he had been
taken down in front of the Western goal.
During its unbeaten run, SPU has won four and
tied two. It was the fourth straight defeat for Western (1-10-1).
The Vikings, earning five corner kicks within a
2-minute span during the second half, finished with an 8-6
advantage but were out-shot by the Falcons 24-12. Kellen Rosten
(So., Colorado Springs, Co.) made six saves for his sixth shutout
and the team's eighth and third in a row. Dragavon made five
stops.
Seattle Pacific completes a four-game home
stand Saturday night when it hosts Simon Fraser, the No. 6 team in
NAIA.
