Martinez Hat Trick Leads No. 2 Falcons Women Over Western Oregon
September 22, 2005

SEATTLE, Wa. (Sept. 22)-Sarah Martinez scored twice in the second half and registered three goals overall, as nationally second-ranked Seattle Pacific University dropped Western Oregon 6-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

Shannon Oakes (Fr., Boise, Id.) opened the scoring in the 19th minute on an unassisted strike from 22 yards (18:09). Just over eight minutes later, Martinez (So., Bothell, Wa.) struck her first goal of the night off a nice serve by midfielder Shannon Lovejoy (Sr., Seattle, Wa.). Lovejoy and Mollie Taylor (Jr., Westlake Village, Ca.) played back and forth off a corner-kick and Lovejoy lofted the ball from the far left into the box. Martinez volleyed the pass by keeper Amanda Nelson to the far post.

Martinez' second and third goals came early in the second half of play. The sophomore forward finished a thru-ball from defender Jean Kolb (Sr., Eugene, Or.) at 54:07, and just under two minutes later, hit net as Heidi Jacobson (Sr., Kirkland, Wa.) nodded down a Jessica Gerstmann (So., Puyallup, Wa.) cross from the left side. Martinez finished the play from eight yards (56:01).

Jacobson notched two scores of her own to bring her season total to nine. She hit net unassisted in the 46th-minute, and shored up the match at 62:31 with help from Gerstmann.

With the victory, the Falcons (2-0-0/9-0-0) pushed their regular season unbeaten streak to 46 matches (44-0-2), and their GNAC unbeaten string to 34 (32-0-1). Seattle Pacific has been to NCAA playoffs in each of the last two seasons.

Nelson saved a dozen balls on the night, and Katie Ruggles (Jr., Eugene, Or.) and Erin Pierce (Sr., Milwaukie, Or.) combined in goal for SPU with one save; the shutout went to Ruggles. SPU out-shot Western Oregon a lopsided 23-1.

Seattle Pacific continues its season-long four match home stand with an afternoon GNAC meet-up with Humboldt State. Kick-off is scheduled for 1PM on Saturday. The Falcons close out the home stand next Wednesday when they take on Western Washington (Sept. 28).
