SEATTLE (Sept. 20) Ross Vaillancourt
set-up all three goals, including two within a 2-minute span in
the second half, as 7th-ranked Seattle Pacific University extended
its unbeaten string to four games with a 3-0 win over Grand Canyon
(Az.) in a men's soccer game at Interbay Stadium Tuesday night.
James Coggan (So., San Jose, Ca.) and Nick
Letts (Sr., Dublin, Ca.) came off the bench for the Falcons'
(7-1-2) first two goals and Colin Rigby (Jr., Mercer Island, Wa.)
added the third. SPU has now won six in a row at home, the last
four by shutout.
Vaillancourt's three assists was a career high
and he also hit the right post with a shot early in the second
period.
Seattle Pacific snapped a scoreless tie just 7
seconds before halftime. Vaillancourt (Sr., Bedford, NH) beat one
man on the left wing and fed the ball into Coggan, who turned and
threaded his 14-yard shot just inside the left post. Of the
Falcons' last seven goals, five have been scored by substitutes.
In the 61st minute, Vaillancourt served a
bending cross to the far post for Letts to powerfully head inside
the right post. Rigby redirected a driven ball from Vaillancourt
into the net only 1:58 later to make it 3-0.
Both goalies did well to keep the game
scoreless for the first 44 minutes. Ninety seconds into the match
the Antelopes' Vincent Cicciardi stretched to his right to tip
Jeff Hallenbeck's 18-yard blast over the bar.
Kellen Rosten (So., Colorado Springs, Co.) of
SPU flung himself at a rising blast by Canyon's Alex Neve to punch
over top for a corner kick. Rosten made a total of five saves to
earn his fourth and the team's sixth shutout.
SPU continues its four-game home stand Saturday
night when it hosts Humboldt State at 7:30.
