SEATTLE, Wa. (Sept. 19)Sarah Martinez,
Shannon Oakes and Carolyn Nason each got goals as 3rd-ranked
Seattle Pacific University used a balanced scoring attack to down
Grand Canyon 3-0, in a non-conference womens soccer match
Monday night at Interbay Stadium.
With the victory, the Falcons improved to 8-0-0
and upped their regular season unbeaten streak to 45 (43-0-2)
games. Seattle Pacific has been to NCAA playoffs each of the last
two seasons.
Martinez (So., Bothell, Wa.) opened up the
scoring in the 13th minute when Megan Lienhard (Sr., Everett, Wa.)
threaded a nifty slot pass through the box from the right side.
Martinez beat Antelope keeper Jen Munger to the far post with one
touch, to give SPU a 1-0 lead at intermission.
The Falcons put together several dangerous
offensive attacks in the second half. Shannon Oakes (Fr., Boise,
Id.) shot twice in two minutes from 25-yards off near the
62-minute mark. Munger batted the first into the crossbar and out
of bounds; the second went wide just left. The freshman midfielder
finally lifted a free kick over the top of the Grand Canyon wall,
from the top of the box at 70:30.
Carolyn Nason (Jr., Lafayette, Co.) finalized
scoring at 79:49 with assistance from Michelle Everson (Sr.,
Tacoma, Wa.). SPU out-shot Grand Canyon a lopsided 23-1 and held
an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks. Munger batted six balls in goal
while Jennifer Burns (Fr., Boise, Id.) was credited with the
shutout.
