Crane 7th in D-1 Cross Country Race; SPU Women 3rd in Sundodger Open

SEATTLE (Sept. 17) ­ Meredith Crane ran a strong seventh in the women's Division I race while the 21st-ranked Seattle Pacific University women took third in the women's open division of the Sundodger Invitational cross country meet Saturday at Lincoln Park.

Crane (Jr., Yakima, Wa./Davis), a transfer from Texas A&M and the only Div. II harrier in the premier race, finished just 31 seconds off the pace of Sundodger champion Haley Paul of Washington State. Paul was first by a 12-second cushion over Idaho's Dee Olson in 20 minutes, 50 seconds over 6000 meters. Crane was timed in 21:21.

The Falcons were the top NCAA team in the 23-team open division. Without Crane, they were third with 177 points. Simon Fraser and British Columbia, both of Canada, were 1-2 with 38 and 89, respectively. Seattle Pacific was seventh out of 28 in the men's open.

Josie Lavin (Sr., Bremerton, Wa./Bremerton) was the top SPU scorer, finishing 16th 22:36, just ahead of in Mary Moriarty (Fr., Seattle, Wa./Ballard), who was 19th 22:38. Karin Rhode (Fr., Bellingham, Wa./Mount Baker) ran 24th in 22:54. Simon Fraser's Kristen Kolstad won in 21:43.

Carlo Lozano (So., Seattle, Wa./Blanchet) and Doug Gibson (Jr., Yakima, Wa./Riverside Christian) led the way for the SPU men in their 8k event. Lozano was 48th in 26:03 and Gibson was two spots back in 27:04. Nick Arciniaga won in 24:39 and Willamette claimed the team title with 45.

Next week Seattle Pacific goes south to the Saint Martin's Invitational in Lacey.
