Jacobson Lifts 7th-Ranked SPU Women Over Bakersfield in OT

BAKERSFIELD, Ca. (Sept. 12)—Heidi Jacobson connected on a 15-yarder in the first overtime period to lift the 7th-ranked Seattle Pacific University women’s soccer team to victory over Cal State Bakersfield 2-1, in a non-conference match in Bakersfield.

In the 94th minute, Jacobson (Sr., Kirkland, Wa.) struck for her fifth goal of 2005, beating Roadrunner keeper Ashley Witten to the post with assistance from Allison Teague (Sr., Redmond, Wa.) to end match play.

With the victory, the Falcons (6-0-0) boosted their unbeaten streak to 43 consecutive regular season games (41-0-2) over three seasons.

Bakersfield opened up scoring in the match at 33:22 as Taylor Sklar chipped a 20-yard shot over the top of outstretched SPU keeper Jennifer Burns’ (Fr., Boise, Id.). Just after intermission (51:34), Sarah Martinez (So., Bothell, Wa.) took a feed from teammate Shannon Lovejoy (Sr., Seattle, Wa.) and slotted it into Bakersfield’s net for the equalizer.

Seattle Pacific peppered 21 shots at Witten, who managed 10 saves. Burns batted off a pair of balls as CSUB shot seven times overall.

The Falcons kick-off Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Friday afternoon at Northwest Nazarene in Idaho. Seattle Pacific was picked to win the conference by the league coaches and will attempt to defend its previous three crowns. SPU returns to Seattle for a four game home stand beginning Sept. 19.
