BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Sept. 12) Andy
Willis scored two goals within an 11-minute span of the first half
and No. 5-ranked Seattle Pacific University went on to beat Far
West Region rival Cal State Bakersfield 2-0 in a men's soccer game
Monday night.
The Falcons (5-1-1) pressured the Roadrunners
(2-3-0) into numerous turnovers and Kellen Rosten (So., Colorado
Springs, Co.) made just two routine saves in posting the team's
fifth shutout.
Willis (Jr., Gig Harbor, Wa./Gig Harbor) scored
his sixth and seventh goals of the season, both on assists from
Steve Spencer (Jr., Scottsdale, Az.), during the first 26 minutes
of the match.
A left-wing cross from Spencer found Willis for
an 8-yard blast into the upper right corner at 14:38. Later, at
25:06, Spencer won possession near the top of the box and fed
Willis for a goal from point-blank range past Bakersfield keeper
Marc Perez.
In the last 18 games in which it has scored
first, Seattle Pacific's record is 17-0-1. This was the Falcons'
first win over the Roadrunners since 2000.
Coach Cliff McCrath revamped his lineup, with
Spencer among four new starters following Saturday's loss at No.
12 Cal State Dominguez Hills. McCrath credited central defenders
Greg Truax (Sr., Corvallis, Or.) and Kye Taylor (Sr., Powell
River, BC) with shutting down the CSB attack.
Seattle Pacific's five-game, two-week road trip
continues Wednesday at Denver against Regis.
