CARSON, Calif. (Sept. 10) Sarah Martinez
struck for a pair of second-half goals as 7th-ranked Seattle
Pacific University came from behind to beat No. 17 Cal State
Dominguez Hills 2-1 for its fifth straight women's soccer win
Saturday.
With 16 minutes remaining, Martinez (So.,
Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) forced a turnover near the top
of the box, pushed the ball past the Toros goalie and scored from
7 yards. It was her third goal of the season.
The Falcons (5-0-0) are now unbeaten in 42
straight regular season games (40-0-2) over three seasons. The
Toros (4-1-0) had their 13-game home win string broken.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, which beaten Seattle
U. Thursday, snapped the SPU defense's 283-minute scoreless streak
in the fourth minute. Corrie Hirokawa headed in a cross at 3:34
for the early lead.
Martinez tied it in the 55th minute, converting
out of a goalmouth scramble. Heidi Jacobson (Sr., Kirkland,
Wa./Cedar Park Christian) and Allie Teague (Sr., Redmond,
Wa./Bellevue Christian) assisted on the play. Martinez also had
shots hit the crossbar, once in each half.
"We showed a tremendous amount of
character," said SPU Coach Chuck Sekyra. "To know we can
come back and win against a great team gives us a great deal of
confidence. We played really in the second half and deserved to
win."
Seattle Pacific finished with a 16-13 edge in
shots. Jen Burns (Fr., Boise, Id./Boise) made four saves for the
Falcons. Burns, the NCAA goals-against average leader, allowed her
first goal of the year.
SPU next travels to Cal State Bakersfield
Monday before beginning Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
