SEATTLE (Sept. 10) Meredith Crane ran to victory in her debut for Seattle Pacific University, leading the Falcons to the women's team title at the Emerald City Open Saturday at Lower Woodland Park.

SPU finished second to Western Washington's perfect score in the men's team standings.

Crane (Jr., Yakima, Wa./Davis), a transfer from Texas A&M, was a decisive victor, winning by 10 seconds over the next competitor and by 41 seconds over the next collegian. Her 5000-meter time was 18 minutes, 16 secondsnearly identical to that of last year's winner, Karen Dickson of Seattle Pacific.

Karin Rhode (Fr., Bellingham, Wa./Mount Baker) and Mary Moriarty (Fr., Seattle, Wa./Ballard), took eighth and ninth, respectively, for the Falcons in 19:19 and 19:23. The other scorers were Josie Lavin (Sr., Bremerton, Wa./Bremerton), 16th in 19:39, and Brnadi McCoy (Jr., Richland, Wa.), 20th in 19:56.

SPU totaled 43 points to runner-up Central Washington's 43.

In the men's 8k event, Casey Moriarty of host Seattle University won in 25:38. The Falcons got a balanced effort with their five scorers finishing between slots 7-17.

Doug Gibson (Jr., Yakima, Wa./Riverside Christian) finished seventh in 27:24, just ahead of teammates Bjorn Bostrom (Jr., La Conner, Wa./Bellingham), 8th in 27:25, and Brian Cronrath (So., Battle Ground, Wa.), 9th in 27:33. Carlo Lozano (So., Seattle, Wa./Blanchet) was 12th in 27:40 and Eddie Strickler (Jr., Richland, Wa.) 17th in 27:46.

Western Washington scored the minimum 15 points. Seattle Pacific, which had won last year, was next with 48.

Next week the SPU harriers will move across town to West Seattle's Lincoln Park for the Sundodger Invitational.
