POMONA, Ca. (Sept. 7)Heidi Jacobson
scored her fourth goal in as many games as 7th-ranked Seattle
Pacific University used five goals in the second half of play to
defeat Cal Poly Pomona 5-0 in a non-conference womens soccer
match Wednesday night in Pomona.
With the victory, Seattle Pacific boosted its
regular season unbeaten streak to 41 consecutive games. The
Falcons have been to the NCAA Division II tournament each of the
last two years and four games into 2005, have out-scored opponents
19-1.
All five goals hit during the second half of
match play, three coming within a four minute span. Samantha
Hufford (Jr., Sammamish, Wa.) got SPU on the scoreboard at 49:59,
beating Pomona keeper Vanessa Richardson on a 20-yard free kick.
Just two minutes later Jessica Gerstmann (So., Puyallup, Wa.)
knocked in a Shannon Lovejoy (Sr., Seattle, Wa.) pass (52:06) and
Sarah Martinez (So., Bothell, Wa.) followed suit at 53:11 with an
unassisted strike.
Jacobson (Sr., Kirkland, Wa.) popped the ball
into the back of the Pomona net with assistance from Shannon Oakes
(Fr., Boise, Id.) in the 69th minute to give Seattle Pacific a 4-0
advantage. The senior has scored in each match of the 05
season.
Kara Hamby (So., Spokane, Wa.) rounded out
scoring in the match late (89:28).
Seattle Pacific out shot Cal Poly Pomona 18-7,
and earned four corner kicks to the Broncos 1. Keeper Jen
Burns (Fr., Boise Id.) earned the shutout in goal, saving three
balls. Pomonas Richardson saved eight.
The Falcons (4-0) face off against No. 17 Cal
State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled
for 12:30PM. SPU plays at Cal State Bakersfield on Monday (Sept.
12).
