SPU vs. CSULA SPU
vs. CPP
SEATTLE (Sept. 3) Cal Poly Pomona fended
off two match points and went on to score three straight to defeat
Seattle Pacific 18-30, 30-24, 20-30, 30-25, 17-15 to wrap up the
Emerald City Classic at Brougham Pavilion Saturday.
SPU also lost to Cal State L.A. (7-0) 24-30,
24-30, 26-30 earlier in the day to fall to 5-3 on the year. It was
a disappointing end to the tournament as SPU opened with a perfect
2-0 record yesterday, including an upset of No. 1 ranked Nebraska
Kearney. Cal Poly Pomona improved to 8-0.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the match with a
pair of convincing victory in Games 1 and 3. After grinding out a
win in Game 4, Pomona captured the early momentum in the fifth and
decisive game by capturing an early 4-1 lead.
SPU battled back to pull ahead 11-9, but the
Broncos scored two straight points to even the match. The teams
traded points on the next seven scores as Pomona avoided
elimination when SPU held leads of 14-13 and 15-14. The Broncos
then got a kill from Allison Anderson, a service ace from Kiting
Kolar and a kill from Jenna Young to close out the match.
Alyssa Given (So., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre
Dame) was one of five SPU players to record double figures in
kills with 16. She also had 11 digs. Katie Ralph (Sr., 6-0, Port
Orchard, Wa./South Kitsap) and Angie Wodrich (So., 5-10, Richland,
Wa.) each had 12 kills. Wodrich also had 19 digs and eight blocks.
Kellie Francis led Pomona with 18 kills,
despite hitting just .046 in the match. Anderson finished with 17
kills in the win. Young added 10.
The Falcons hit .191 for the match and held the
Broncos to just .141. SPU also held a 13-11 advantage in blocks.
Between Nebraska Kearney last night and both
opponents today, the Falcons faced undefeated teams in three
straight matches and four out of the last five. All three SPU
losses have been to teams with undefeated records at the time.
The battle between the Broncos and Falcons
provided the most excitement on the second and final day of the
tournament as all three other Saturday matches at Brougham ended
in three-game sweeps.
Earlier in the afternoon, Shelby Gihring (Jr.,
5-10, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) led the Falcons with 13 kills and a .321
hitting percentage, but Seattle Pacific could not stop the
hard-hitting Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles hit
at a .343 in both Games 1 and 2, and finished at .274 for the
match. SPU recorded a .195 percentage.
CSLAs Tanya White led all players with 21
kills, while hitting .441. Luana Cavalcanti added 17 kills and 14
digs.
Ralph hit .353 and had seven kills in the loss.
Wodrich finished with 10 kills and four blocks.
In other tournament action, the top-ranked
Lopers of Nebraska Kearney (7-1) recovered from their loss to
Seattle Pacific last night with a 30-18, 30-21, 30-27 sweep of
Western Washington. Erin Brosz and Erin Gudmundson led five Lopers
in double figures with 13 kills each. Tiana Roma led WWU with nine
kills.
The Lopers hit .414 for the match and held
Western to just .183.
In the opening match of the day, Marissa Hill
had 16 kills to lead Western Washington past Chico State in a
30-24, 30-25, 30-26 sweep. Hill hit .483, and Western hit at a
.303 clip as a team. Chicos Lindsay Macias led all players
with 18 kills in the loss on a .567 hitting percentage.
The Falcons have one more match before Great
Northwest Athletic Conference play begins next Saturday. SPU hosts
No. 20 Chaminade on Thursday (Sep. 8) at 7:00 p.m.
