SEATTLE (Sept. 3) Kellen Rosten stopped
eight shots, including a leaping save with 23 seconds remaining,
as Seattle Pacific University prevailed over Sonoma State 2-0 in a
a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday night at Interbay
Stadium.
A first-half goal by Andy Willis staked the
Falcons (3-0-1) to an early lead and James Coggan added a second
score as time expired.
The outcome of the game remained in doubt until
Rosten (So., Colorado Springs, Co.) felw across the face of the
goal to tip a shot by Mason Hill-Harrill away from the upper left
corner. Moments later, Rosten was credited with a rare assist as
his long goal kick was flicked on by Willis to Coggan for the
final goal.
Willis (Jr., Gig Harbor, Wa./Gig Harbor) struck
for his fifth goal of the season in the 19th minute. Colin Rigby
(Jr., Mercer Island, Wa.) slipped a pass across the box and Willis
buried a 12-yard shot past Sonoma keeper Clark Rupp.
The Seawolves (0-2-1) nearly knotted it shortly
thereafter but Andrew Bailey, breaking down the right wing, was
denied by Rosten from close range.Rosten then made a double save
off Travis Ryan and, on the rebound, Tim Maycock in the 23rd
minute but was injured on the play and left the game for 6
minutes.
In the second half, Rosten went down to stop a
header from Hill-Harrill from a free kick in the 57th minute. With
12 minutes left, Rosten went down at the feet of Vince Morrow to
block another shot in the crease.
Willis was denied by Rupp on a breakaway in the
64th minute, the with the Seawolves goalie rushing out to parry a
shot near the top of the box.
SPU out-shot Sonoma 16-13. Each team had four
corners.
SPU is on the road for its next five games,
starting Tuesday at Cal Poly Pomona.
