Falcons Shock Top-Ranked Lopers in Emerald City Volleyball Classic; Defeat Chico State Too

SEATTLE (Sept. 2) – Angie Wodrich had a career-high 18 kills to lead the Seattle Pacific volleyball team past No. 1 ranked Nebraska Kearney 3-1 to highlight the opening day of the Emerald City Classic at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons also knocked off Chico State earlier in the afternoon to improve to 5-1 on the year and dropped the Lopers to 5-1. Seattle Pacific rallied after falling in game one for a 21-30, 30-22, 30-23, 30-28 victory.

Wodrich (So., 5-10, Richland, Wa.) also hit for a match-high .405 percentage, and recorded new career highs with 12 digs and six blocks. She carried the Falcons late in the match as 12 of her kills came in the final two games in which she hit over .500. Wodrich broke a 28-28 tie in game four with her final kill of the match, followed by the winner from Jenna Von Moos (Jr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.).

Alyssa Given (So., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) chipped in with 15 kills and 11 digs. Katie Ralph (Sr., 6-0, Port Orchard, Wa./South Kitsap) added 14 kills on .220 hitting and five blocks. The Falcons held a 13-6 advantage in blocks.

Nebraska Kearney All-American Erin Gudmundson rallied her team with a match-high 24 kills while hitting at a .404 clip. She also had nine digs and four blocks. Erin Brosz and Ashley Solt had 12 kills each.

Von Moos led all players with 52 assists in the victory. SPU’s Torii Mount (Fr., 5-2, Gresham, Or.) had a match-high 26 digs, also a career best.

The Falcons hit just .047 in their game one defeat, but stormed back to out-hit the Lopers .193 to .172 for the match. It was SPU’s second victory over a ranked opponent this year. The Falcons knocked off 14th-ranked Grand Valley State 3-1 last week at the Ferris State Invitational.

Earlier in the day, Wodrich smashed 10 kills and hit at a .421 clip to help lead SPU past Chico State (3-2) 34-32, 30-23, 30-17. After a slow start, SPU staved off one game point before finishing strong for the sweep.

Shelby Gihring (Jr., 5-10, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) hit for a career-high 15 kills on .464 hitting. SPU hit a season-best .339 in the match.

In other matches, Cal Poly Pomona prevailed in five games over Western Washington, which had split two matches with defending national champion Barry (Fla.) a week ago. Jenna Young’s 23 kills helped the Broncos remain unbeaten, 30-20, 29-31, 30-23, 26-30, 15-5.

Later in the afternoon, the Vikings stumbled against Cal State L.A. as the Golden Eagles (6-0) remained unbeaten with a 30-24, 30-25, 30-24 sweep of the Vikings. Tanya White led three Cal State players in double figures with 15 kills. Western got seven kills each from Krystal Knight and Sarah Primrose.

The Falcons take on Cal State L.A. tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the final day of the tournament. SPU also faces Cal Poly Pomona at 7:00 p.m. In other action, Western Washington will play Chico State at 11:30 a.m. in the opening match of the day. The Vikings also face Nebraska Kearney at 4:30 p.m.
