August 27, 2005

Box Score
SPU vs. Ferris St.

Big Rapids, Mi. (Aug. 27) The Seattle Pacific University volleyball team gave first-year skipper Chris Johnson a perfect 3-0 start to his coaching career with an early morning victory, but fell to No. 17 and tournament host Ferris State later in the day at the Ferris State Holiday Inn Invitational on Saturday.

The Falcons got a solid start to their 2005 season with a 3-1 record in the tournament, including a victory over 14th-ranked Grand Valley State yesterday.

In the first match of the day, SPU cruised past Wheeling Jesuit (1-3) of West Virginia 31-29, 30-18, 30-24. The Falcons gave host Ferris State a scare with a victory in game one, but lost the next three games for a 30-28, 23-30, 19-30, 25-30 loss. Ferris State improved to a perfect 5-0.

Seniors Katie Ralph (6-0, Port Orchard, Wa./South Kitsap) and Chelsey Myers (5-10, Minden, Nv./Douglas) had 10 kills apiece to lead SPU. Jenna Von Moos (Jr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) had a match-high 37 assists and 15 digs in the loss. Torii Mount (Fr., 5-2, Gresham, Or.) led all players with 22 digs.

Von Moos and Ralph were both selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Danielle Baucher led Ferris State with 15 kills and 18 digs. Lauren Heine added nine kills and 11 blocks, and Lindsay Tye recorded 11 kills.

The Falcons hit just .022 for the match, mostly on account of Ferris State’s defense at the net, which included 14 blocks. The Bulldogs hit at a .159 clip.

Official statistics from the match against Wheeling Jesuit were not available at time of release.

The Falcons return home to host the Emerald City Classic Sep. 2-3. Seattle Pacific will face top ranked Nebraska Kearney as well as three Pacific Region foes.
