SEATTLE (June 1) In the closest race in
four years, Seattle Pacific University finished three points short
of overtaking Western Washington as the Great Northwest Athletic
Conference All-Sports Team Champion.
The Falcons claimed their second straight
women's title but finished just behind the Vikings (161-158) for
the overall prize. Last year, Western finished 18 points ahead of
second place Western Oregon. Earlier margins had been 30 and 40
points.
SPU won a total of four GNAC titles in 2004-05,
including women's soccer, men's cross country, women's basketball
and women's indoor track and field. Central Washington and Western
took first in three apiece.
Seattle Pacific edged Central 96-92 in the
women's tabulation. Western Washington won the men's with 76
points, followed by Western Oregon (64) and SPU (62).
Points are awarded (on a two-point increment)
based on the final conference finishes in each of the conference's
14 sports football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer,
men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball,
men's and women's indoor track & field, men's and women's
outdoor track & field, baseball and softball.
Seven of the conference's 10 schools won at
least one conference team title.
