SEATTLE (May 17) Danielle Ayers-Stamper
will compete in four eventsthe most ever by a Seattle
Pacific University athleteat next week's NCAA Division II
track and field championships.
The Falcons will send a total of eight
athletes, including six women and two men, to the national meet,
May 26-28 in Abilene, Tx.
Ayers-Stamper (Jr., Lacrosse, Wa.) owns the No.
2 qualifying mark in the heptathlon, a two-day competition
combining seven events. She is No. 4 in both the 100-meter hurdles
and high jump, and also made the final cut in the javelin.
Ayers-Stamper was the NCAA runner-up in the
heptathlon as a freshman and fourth last season. She won the
national title in indoor high jump in March. Previously, the most
national events for a Seattle Pacific woman was three by Karin
Grelsson in 1992 and '93. Ayers-Stamper would have been included
in the long jump field but opted not to declare.
Chris Randolph (Jr., Lone Tree, Co./Denver
Christian) is the nation's No. 1 qualifier in the men's decathlon
while Paul Mach (Sr., Seattle, Wa./King's) is No. 2 in the 800
run. Randolph was third in 2004 while Mach was ninth at the 2004
indoor meet.
Three of the Falcon women are freshmen and
Ayers-Stamper is the only previous qualifier. Lauren VerMulm (Fr.,
Mount Vernon, Wa.) is seeded No. 2 and one of three javelin
entries for SPU. Molly Hornbuckle (So., Burien, Wa./Highline) and
Ayers-Stamper are the others.
Kelsey Cooley (Fr., Missoula, Mt./Hellgate)
earned a berth in the heptathlon, Bridgette Sexton (Fr., LaCenter,
Wa.) in the 800 and Amy Harris (Jr., Corvallis, Or./Crescent
Valley) in the pole vault.
Just missing the qualifying cut were three SPU
athletes. Ally Studer (Sr., Redmond, Wa./Redmond) missed making
the pole vault field by one place and three-quarters of an inch.
Studer was an All-American twice and a three-time NCAA qualifier.
Linda Blake (Jr., Richland, Wa.) was two spots
down the list of eventual heptathlon qualifiers; the lowest score
was 4694 and she scored 4680. In the decathlon, where 14 men were
selected, Jason Childress (Fr., Arlington, Wa.) was 17th and
missed by 27 points.
