PALO ALTO, Calif. (Mar. 26) Danielle
Ayers-Stamper became only the third Seattle Pacific University
hurdler to break 14 seconds and broke the Great Northwest Athletic
Conference record for the second time in as many days Saturday at
the Stanford Invitational track and field meet.
Ayers-Stamper (Jr., LaCrosse, Wa.) ran the
100-meter hurdles in 13.93 seconds to finish eighth in a strong
field of finalists. Former Rainier Beach standout Virginia Powell,
now a junior at USC, won in 12.95 seconds--the top time in the
world this year.
Not since 1992 has an SPU hurdler gone under 14
seconds. Karen Lauve set the record of 13.65 that season, breaking
Anita Sartins previous mark of 13.5.
Later, in the high jump, Ayers-Stamper cleared
5 feet, 5 inches.
Both Falcon men competitors were beset by falls
in their respective races. Paul Mach (Sr., Seattle, Wa./Kings)
was pushed and fell during the first lap of the 800. He got up to
finish in 1:58.00. Doug Gibson (So., Yakima, Wa./Riverside
Christian) was bumped on the second lap of the steeplechase and
hit the barrier. He was unable to continue.
Seattle Pacific goes to Bellingham for the
Vernnachia Team Classic next Saturday.
