Falcon Gymnasts Fourth at MPSF Championships
March 25, 2005

DAVIS, Ca. (Mar. 25)—Corrie McDaniel tumbled third place on floor exercise and Debra Huss finished third in the all-around competition as USA Gymnastics 3rd-ranked Seattle Pacific University finished in fourth place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships Friday night at UC Davis' The Pavilion.

Sacramento State upset two time defending MPSF Champion San Jose State, winning the meet with a 194.550 team total. The Spartans came in second with 192.025, just ahead of host UC Davis’ 191.400. Seattle Pacific tumbled a 190.275 followed by Air Force (189.850) and Alaska Anchorage (189.275), who were fifth and sixth.

The Hornets rode the all-around performance of Nirvana Zaher all the way to the top of the podium. As a team, Sacramento won each and every event but vault outright, including scores of 48.800 on bars and 48.700 on beam.

In addition to her 49.025 winning all-around total, Zaher tumbled herself into the thick of the awards on vault and floor exercise, winning vault in a 9.875 tie with Alaska Anchorage’s Dominique Ingram and finishing second on floor (9.775).

The Falcons garnered two podium finishes on the night. McDaniel (Sr., Lawrence, Ks.) danced a 9.725 on the mats to finish in third behind Zaher and winner Stefanie Aeder (9.800). Aeder also finished in a tie for second on balance beam for the Hornets, with teammate Melissa Genovese (9.850).

Huss (So., Orangevale, Ca.) managed a 38.650 total over four event s in the all-around competition , finishing in third behind San Jose’s Michelle Minotti (38.700) and Zaher for SPU’s second platform finish. Huss’ top event score was beam, where she negotiated a 9.825. Davis’ Tiffany Chan won beam with a 9.875.

The Hornets’ Alexis Tsurumoto won the uneven bar competition, landing her dismount for a 9.900. Teammate Jessica Hoffman swung a 9.800 for second place, and Davis’ Brandi Forte won third with 9.775.

Team-wise, Seattle Pacific went into the meet springing off a near-record team total of 193.650 in a home win over Anchorage last week. The Falcons struggled particularly on balance beam in Davis, hitting a season low 46.800 team tally.

Seattle Pacific competes next as a team at the USA Gymnastics National Championships, Apr. 14-16 in Ithaca, N.Y.
