SEATTLE, Wa. (Mar. 19)— Debra Huss broke a four year old school record in the all-around contest and Kari Kelly tied her own school record on vault as Seattle Pacific University beat Alaska Anchorage 193.650 to 191.175 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s gymnastics meet Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.

Huss (So., Orangevale, Ca.) totaled 39.225 over four events, breaking the old record of 39.125 set by Alison Siegel in 2001. The sophomore earned marks of 9.650 on vault and 9.825 on bars, and scored 9.875 on beam and floor exercise. Huss finished first overall on bars and beam, leading an SPU sweep on the former, and tied for second with teammate Sarah Sullivan (So., Salem, Or.) among floor competitors.

The Falcons (4-15) were ranked No. 3 in the latest USA Gymnastics national rankings and were a mere .50 off a school record team total. The record of 193.700 was set in 2001 at Brougham against Western Michigan. Seattle Pacific did manage a record vault total against the Seawolves, scoring 48.650 to obliterate the old vault record of 48.525, also set in ’01.

Kelly (Sr., Yakima, Wa.) launched a 9.875 to put the exclamation point on the vault team mark during the opening rotation, equaling the record she already shares with current teammate Jaynie Reynolds (Jr., White Rock, B.C.). Kelly hit an identical mark at Oregon State in February of ’04. She tied for first place on the night with Anchorage’s Dominique Ingram. The Falcons’ Kristin Bryant (So., Anchorage, Ak.) was third with a career-best 9.850.

On bars, Huss’ high mark was followed by teammates Reynolds (9.775) and Christie Chinaka (Fr., Honolulu, Hi.). Chinaka swung a career-high 9.700.

Ashley Domres (Fr., Phoenix, Az.) negotiated a 9.675 on beam to land her in third place behind Huss and Anchorage’s Jessica Portlock (9.675). The Seawolves’ Ingram won floor exercise (9.925) en route to a second place finish in the all-around (38.450).

Following the meet, seniors Kelly, Elisabeth Kingsley (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Corrie McDaniel (Lawrence, Ks.) were honored in a brief ceremony commemorating their final home performances. Kelly and McDaniel will exit the program as two-time All-Americans and Kingsley was all-conference on floor in ’04, and has been a mainstay on floor and vault for four years.

Seattle Pacific and Anchorage (6-10) tumble next at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships Mar. 25 in Davis, Ca. Official meet start time is slated for 6PM.
