TACOMA, Wash. (Mar. 5) Ally Studer and
Molly Hornbuckle picked up wins while posting provisional national
qualifying marks in the pole vault, and javelin , respectively to
lead Seattle Pacific University to an easy victory in a three-way
track and field meet Saturday at Baker Stadium.
On the opening weekend of the outdoor season,
the Falcon women won 11 of 18 events and scored 95 points to beat
both host Puget Sound (56) and Lewis & Clark (30). The SPU
men, getting three wins from Chris Randolph (Jr., Lone Tree, Co.)
were second (57) to UPS (94). Lewis & Clark was third (25).
Studer (Sr., Redmond, Wa./Redmond) took first
in the vault with a best clearance of 11 feet, 11¾ inches.
Teammate Monica Anderson (Fr., Bremerton, Wa.) finished second
with a personal-best mark of 11-5¾ .
Hornbuckle (So., Burien, Wa./Highline) notched
her first collegiate win with a throw of 140-3, leading SPU to a
sweep. It was a lifetime best throw by over 8 feet. Sarah Johnson
(Sr., Kennewick, Wa.) was runner-up (133-6) and Lauren VerMulm
(Fr., Mount Vernon, Wa.) was third (129-8).
Randolph established two personal records in
taking the 110-meter hurdles (15.24) and discus (134-9). He was
also first in the javelin (169-3). The men won a total of eight
events.
At Washington's Dempsey Indoor, Danielle
Ayers-Stamper (Jr., LaCrosse, Wa.) and pole vaulters Allie Hedges
(So., Richland, Wa.) and Amy Harris (Jr., Philomath, Or.) prepared
for next weekend's NCAA Championships in Boston. Competing against
a largely Div. I field, Ayers-Stamper was second in the 60 hurdles
(8.78) and third in the long jump (18-7¾ ). Hedges and Harris
vaulted 11-5¾ .
Other than the eight women qualifiers for
indoor nationals, the Falcons will remain outdoors and return to
Tacoma for the Joe Peyton Invitational.
