SEATTLE, Wa. (Mar. 5) -- Kari Kelly led a
Seattle Pacific sweep on vault and Debra Huss won the floor
exercise and all-around competition as USA Gymnastics 2nd-ranked
Seattle Pacific University picked up its first home win, defeating
Sacramento State 192.375 to 191.950 in a Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation women's gymnastics meet Saturday night at Brougham
Pavilion.
The 192.375 team total was a season high for
the Falcons (3-10) and marked their first victory over the Hornets
since 2001. Seattle Pacific was 4-1 at home in 2004, its sole loss
coming at the hands of Sacramento (8-8).
Kelly (Sr., Yakima, Wa.) launched a 9.800
during the opening rotation, and was followed by teammate Sarah
Sullivan (So., Salem, Or.), who landed 9.700. Kristin Bryant (So.,
Anchorage, Ak.) completed the sweep (9.625) and lifted SPU to a
.400 lead heading toward the uneven bars.
Down 143.775 to 144.325 after three rotations,
it was fortuitous that Seattle Pacific's top event score on the
night was floor. Huss (So., Orangevale, Ca.) twisted her way to a
9.825, just .125 ahead of teammate Corrie McDaniel (Sr., Lawrence,
Ks.) who tied with Sacramento's Stefanie Aeder for second (9.775).
As a team, the Falcons tumbled 48.600.
Huss' top floor score boosted her to a 38.275,
good enough to win the four event all-around competition. The
Hornets' Nirvana Zaher finished second with 38.125 and Sullivan
was third (38.100).
Sullivan and Ashley Domres (Fr., Phoenix, Az.)
picked up second and third place finishes as SPU swung a 47.925
team total on bars, scoring 9.700 and 9.650, respectively. The
Hornets' Meloney Greer won the unevens (9.800) and teammates
Kimiye Narasaki and Alexis Tsurumoto tied with Domres for bronze.
On beam, it was Sacramento's Melissa Genovese,
negotiating a 9.775 victory over McDaniel, Domres and Narasaki
(9.750).
Seattle Pacific takes to the road next week in
a non-conference quadrangular meet Friday (Mar. 11) at Boise
State. The Falcons' last meet of the regular season is March 19 at
Brougham. USA Gymnastics Nationals is Apr. 14-16 in Ithaca, NY.
