Season
and Game Stats
SEATTLE (Feb. 24) Grayson Moyer's
buzzer-beating three-pointer gave Humboldt State a 71-69 victory
over 21st-ranked Seattle Pacific University in a Great Northwest
Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Brougham Pavilion
Thursday night.
It was the first home loss of the season for
the Falcons (10-5, 18-7) and the Lumberjacks' (7-8, 15-9) first
win in 14 trips to the pavilion. The defeat dropped SPU into third
place in the GNAC, one game behind Alaska Fairbanks and Western
Washington.
Jordan Lee (Sr., 6-1, Tacoma, Wa./Life
Christian) paced all players with 27 points and Dustin Bremerman
(So., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) had 21 for Seattle Pacific,
which has now dropped three of its last four.
Trailing by one, Moyer took the inbound pass
from Jeramiah Ward near midcourt, dribbled right and cast a
22-footer which swished through the net as the buzzer sounded.
Moyer led the visitors with 17 points.
Jason Chivers (Sr., 6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.) had
given SPU a 69-68 lead, taking a feed from Bremerman for a layup
with 6 seconds left. Humboldt inbounded the ball and called
timeout with 3.9 seconds remaining to set-up the final shot.
Chivers finished with 15 points and 19 rebounds
as SPU controlled the boards, 45-35. However, Humboldt State shot
45 percent (27-60) and became the first opponent in 16 games to
out-score the Falcons in the second half. In losing for the first
time in 12 home contests, they shot just 36 percent (25-70)
The Lumberjacks, with a solid interior defense,
held the lead for much of the game, including a 9-point advantage
with 12:21 left. Lee, Bremerman and Chivers eventually battled
back, with the Falcons re-taking the lead, 52-51, on a Bremerman
three-point play. The lead changed hands six times and the score
was six times in the final seven minutes.
Lee's backdoor layup from a Chivers assist gave
SPU its largest second-half lead at 67-63 with 96 seconds left,
but Aaron Hungerford scored the game's next five points before
Chivers answered.
Seattle Pacific survived a horrendous stretch
in the first half when it fell behind by 12. It missed 12 of 13
field goals as the Lumberjacks slowly moved in front, 20-8. But
Bremerman and Lee finally warmed-up and brought the falcons level
at 24, combining 14 points during a 16-4 run. SPU shot 31 percent
for the half and the two teams committed 17 turnovers.
The final home game for the Falcons is Saturday
night at 7 versus Western Oregon.
