No. 4 SPU Women Down Central Washington

SEATTLE (Feb. 19) ­ Carli Smith scored a career-high 22 points and Amy Taylor added 21 to lead No. 4-ranked Seattle Pacific University past Central Washington 87-77 in Great Northwest Conference action Saturday at Brougham Pavilion.

With the win, the Falcons (13-1, 21-2) maintained their lead over Western Washington in conference play and pushed their home winning streak to 26 straight.

After leading 42-36 at the half, SPU pushed its lead to 58-42 with 16:10 remaining. The Wildcats (7-7, 14-9) pulled to within four (70-66) at the 8:32 mark, before the Falcons went on a 13-2 run to put the game out of reach. Taylor (Sr., 5-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) and Michelle Beaumont (Sr., 5-11, Bellingham. Wa/Sehome) each hit a pair of treys during the stretch.

The Falcons shot a sizzling 60 percent (9-for-15) from three-point range, led by Taylor’s 5-of-6 performance beyond the arc. Overall, SPU sank 53 percent of its field goals while holding Central to 40 percent from the field.

Mandy Wood (Jr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) scored 12 points, Brittney Kroon (Jr., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) chipped in 11 points and four blocks and Beaumont added 10 for Seattle Pacific. Smith (Jr., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) led SPU with nine boards while Taylor dished seven assists.

Laura Wright led the Wildcats with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Loni Ainslie scored 17, Alayna Vincent had 14 and Jamie Corwin added 13. Central won the battle of the boards, 38-37.

SPU next hosts Seattle University on Thursday evening at 5:30.
