Season
and Game Stats
ANCHORAGE (Feb. 19) Jeff Knudson
connected on a key three-pointer and Ralph Steele sank all six of
his free throws in the second overtime period as 17th-ranked
Seattle Pacific University kept its Great Northwest Athletic
Conference title hopes alive with a 117-112 comeback victory over
Alaska Anchorage Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Tony Binetti (Jr., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) led the
Falcons (10-4, 18-6) with 21 points, Jason Chivers (Sr., 6-8, Los
Angeles, Ca.) scored six of his 20 in the first overtime and
Jordan Lee (Sr., 6-1, Tacoma, Wa./Life Christian) added 19,
including a three-pointer which tied the game at the end of
regulation.
Seattle Pacific trailed by seven points with 1
minute, 47 seconds left in the second half and by five midway
through the first overtime but rallied to take its first season
series sweep of the Seawolves (4-11, 10-14) and move into a
second-place tie with Western Washington. Alaska Fairbanks moved
into first by beating the Vikings.
Although Anchorage led virtually the entire
first 45 minutes, it was SPU which seized the advantage in the
second extra period. Knudson (Jr., 6-7, Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak)
connected on a 25-footer to give the visitors a 108-103 edge.
Steele (Sr., 6-2, No. Birmingham, Al.) sank two foul shots on the
next possession and UAA never pulled closer than three the rest of
the way.
Steele finished 11 for 11 at the line and had
15 points. Knudson came off the bench for 11, including 3 of 5
three-pointers.
Marcus Robinson of the Seawolves led all
scorers with 38 points but had two crucial missed free throws in
the final 30 seconds of regulation. James Hartman had a chance to
win the game at the end of the second overtime but, with the score
tied at 101, missed two free throws.
Seattle Pacific, following a cold start, shot
52 percent from the field, including 7-11 in the overtimes.
Chivers converted 10 of 12 field goals. The falcons were also
34-41 on free throws and owned a 39-33 margin in rebounds.
Seattle Pacific didn't take its first lead
until early in the second half. However, when Binetti and Chivers
exited with four fouls, Anchorage began to move in front. Carl
Arts score three baskets during a 12-5 burst which seemed to seal
a win when UAA took an 84-77 lead. Binetti and Chivers scored
before Lee's game-tying shot.
In the first overtime, UAA was ahead 99-94.
Steel was fouled on a three-pointer and made all three shots, then
Lee sank a 15-footer to knot the score.
The Seawolves led the entire first period, and
threatened to break open the game following a rash of SPU
turnovers. Robinson drilled three three-pointers to help push UAA
in front, 38-26.
Jeff Hironaka called timeout, inserted a cast
of reserves and the Falcons quickly mounted a comeback. Lee,
Knudson and Drew Matzen got treys during a 15-7 spurt to finish
the half and close the gap to 45-41.
Seattle Pacific plays its next two games at
home, beginning with Humboldt State Thursday at 7:30.
