Season
and Game Stats
LACEY, Wa. (Feb. 10) -- Martina Kartikova had
16 points and 11 rebounds, and the Saints held off a late run by
the Falcons as host Saint Martin's handed Seattle Pacific its
first conference loss in over three years with a 64-50 victory in
Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday night in
Lacey.
Seattle Pacific (11-1 GNAC, 19-2) shot a
season-worst 30 percent and scored a season low 50 points as its
league winning streak came to an end at 53 games. The Falcons,
ranked No. 1 in the west region and No. 2 nationally, suffered
their first GNAC loss since Feb. 7, 2002. The Saints (9-2 GNAC,
15-5) also snapped SPU's 17-game winning streak.
The Falcons, who trailed by 13 points at
halftime, fell behind by 17 just two minutes into the second half.
The Falcons, however, stormed back with a 24-6 run over the next
13 minutes to pull even 46-46 on a pair of free throws by Amy
Taylor (Sr., 5-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) with 5:17 left to
play.
But the Saints held the Falcons without a field
goal until Taylor ended the drought with a meaningless bucket with
12 second left in the game. Kartikova broke the tie with five
straight points to catalyze an 18-2 run that gave Saint Martin's a
64-48 lead with 27 seconds remaining.
Taylor was the only SPU player to score in
double figures. She finished with 15 point. Quinn Brewe (Fr., 6-1,
Edmonds, Wa./Meadowdale) chipped in eight points and nine rebounds
in 22 minutes off the bench. Michelle Beaumont (Sr., 5-11,
Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) came off the bench to contribute eight
points and six rebounds. Carli Smith (Jr., 5-11, Spokane,
Wa./Valley Christian) scored four points and grabbed a game-high
13 rebounds in the loss.
Beth Layton led all players with 21 points in
the win for the Saints, who snapped a 12-game losing streak
against SPU and pulled to within a game and a half of the Falcons
in the conference standings. Julia Eisentrout added 12 points and
five minutes.
Seattle Pacific scored the first seven points
of the game, but found points tough to come by after that. Saint
Martin's answered with nine straight points and parlayed that into
a 15-2 run to capture the lead for good.
SPU's bench outscored SMC's 20-4, but the
Falcons got just 30 points from their starters. The Saints shot
just 31.8 percent from the field, including a dismal 5-for-28
(17.9 percent) from three-point range, but it was enough to hold
off Seattle Pacific's worst offensive performance of the season.
The Falcons, who rank nationally in three-point shooting, were
just 5-for-22 (22.7 percent) from long range. SPU also committed
23 turnovers, its third highest total of the season.
