Second-Ranked Falcons Use Late Run for 53rd Straight League Win

SEATTLE (Feb. 5) -- Reserves Michelle Beaumont and Quinn Brewe scored six points apiece to key a 17-2 run midway through the second half as Seattle Pacific pulled away from visiting Humboldt State for a 93-71 victory in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at SPU's Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (11-0 GNAC, 19-1), ranked No. 1 in the west region and No. 2 nationally, won their 53rd straight GNAC contest in front of their largest crowd of the season. Nearly 1,000 fans packed into Brougham Pavilion to celebrate a homecoming basketball doubleheader with the SPU men hosting Central Washington. Humboldt State fell to 3-8 in the GNAC and 6-14 overall.

Seattle Pacific led by 17 points at halftime, but Humboldt State trimmed that in half and trailed by just eight with 10 minutes left t play. Brewe (Fr., 6-1, Edmonds, Wa./Meadowdale) responded with two straight baskets. Beaumont (Sr., 5-11, Bellingham. Wa/Sehome) then scored six straight, Brewe scored a put-back, and Brittney Kroon (Jr., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) added a bucket to put the Falcons on top 83-60, their largest lead of the game, with just under four minutes left to play.

Beaumont led all bench players with 17 and Brewe finished with nine, as Seattle Pacific's reserves outscored Humboldt's 39-13. Beaumont shot 6-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from three-point range. Amy Taylor (Sr., 5-6, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood)

poured in 11 of her game-high 18 points in the first half to help the Falcons get off to a blazing start. She also finished with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Behind Taylor, the Falcons shot 77 percent in the first 13 minutes of the contest and jumped out to a 23-point lead, 36-13. The Lumberjacks, behind 14 first-half points from Jenna Washington cut the deficit down to 17, 50-33, at halftime.

Jenny Poe (Jr., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa.) added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists in the victory for SPU. Kroon finished with 10 points, three rebounds and four blocks. Carli Smith (Jr., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) chipped in eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Falcons also got another solid effort from backup point guard Beth Christensen (Fr., 5-5, Enumclaw, Wa.), who finished with six points and eight assists.

Washington was held to just two points in the second half and finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Team leading scorer Nicole Lynch picked up the slack with nine second half points to finish with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Kelly Fay was also in double figures with 10 points.

The Falcons shot 58 percent in the first half and finished at 50 percent for the game. SPU also cashed in on 10-of-21 (48 percent) three-point field goals and 17-of-21 (81 percent) free throws. The Jacks shot 42 percent in the contest and 65 percent from the foul line. Seattle Pacific had a 48-29 advantage in rebounds.

Along with their impressive conference winning streak, the Falcons have won 25 straight at home and 17 straight overall. SPU has also won 79 of its last 80 regular season games and is in the driver's seat to capture its third straight regional crown and top seed for the NCAA II west region playoffs. With their next victory, the Falcons will record their sixth straight 20-win season and eighth in the past nine years.

The Falcons hit the road for a pair of GNAC games beginning on Thursday at Saint Martin's. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
