Season
and Game Stats
SEATTLE (Feb. 5) -- Jason Chivers scored 14 of
his 23 points in the second half to pace 13th-ranked Seattle
Pacific University to its 11th home win in a row, 72-65 over
Central Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game
played before nearly 2,000 fans at Brougham Pavilion Saturday.
Tony Binetti (Jr., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) added 18
points and Dustin Bremerman scored seven points during an early
second-period surge for the Falcons (9-2, 17-4), who remained in
first place with their 15th straight homecoming victory and
seventh in the last eight outings overall.
Chivers (Sr., 6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.) continued
his recent tear by hitting nine of 13 field goals, including three
jumpers from the outside. He also snared nine rebounds and blocked
three shots. He has averaged more than 23 points over the last
five games.
Bremerman and Chad Williams (Jr., 6-8,
Burlington, Wa.) figured heavily as SPU charged out of the
extended halftime break by scoring the first 12 points of the
second period to go in front for good, 43-35. Williams had the
final four points by converting offensive rebounds underneath.
Another 8-2 burst put the Falcons ahead by 13
(59-46) before the Wildcats (4-7, 8-12)made on last run. Three
free throws by Kyle Boast cut it to 67-63 with 675 second left but
Binetti answered by making four free throws on the next two
possessions and Central got no closer.
Derek Groth led the visitors with 18 points and
Chris Bannish had 17, but the 'Cats shots just 35 percent (23-65)
Seattle Pacific out-rebounded CWU 24-15 in the
second half, when they also made 47 percent of their shots from
the floor. It was one of the few games this season in which the
Falcons shot poorly (40 percent overall, 25-63) yet won. They made
19 of 21 foul shots and have now out-scored the opposition in the
second half of 12 consecutive games.
Central, which had beaten SPU a month ago, took
advantage of cold outside shooting by the Falcons in the first
half. Lance Den Boer, Bannish and Groth each hit a pair of
three-pointers, with Bannish's second trey making it 34-31 at the
half.
Seattle Pacific, which missed 12 of 14 threes,
kept it close, thanks to Chivers and Binetti, with each scoring
nine first-half points.
The Falcons play their next three on the road,
beginning Saturday at Western Washington.
