Chivers Nets 26 As SPU Maintains GNAC Lead With Men's Basketball Road Win at Humboldt State
January 29, 2005

Season and Game Stats

ARCATA, Calif. (Jan. 29) -- Behind the 26 points and 15 rebounds of center Jason Chivers, No. 8-ranked Seattle Pacific University pounded Humboldt State 79-57 before a capacity crowd in East Gym to finish the first half of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season in first place.

The Falcons (7-2, 15-4), who won for the fifth time in six games, also got 16 points from Tony Binetti and 15 from Jordan Lee while holding the Lumberjacks (4-5, 12-6) to the lowest total in an SPU road game in more than two years.

Seattle Pacific seized the lead at the end of the opening period, but not until the final seven minutes did it clinch its second road win.

Lee (Sr., 6-1, Tacoma, Wa./Life Christian) hit a three-pointer to commence a 19-4 run to put the visitors in command, 79-53. It was the Falcons' first win at Humboldt since 2001 and they have already surpassed last year's total of 14 victories.

Chivers (Sr., 6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.) muscled inside to make 11 of 16 field goals, Four baskets came from his six offensive boards. Seattle Pacific shot 55 percent (30-55), converted 12 of 14 free throws and finished with a 37-29 rebounding advantage.

After relying on Chivers to carry the offense with 12 points in the first 10 minutes, it was the Falcon defense which ignited a late first-half surge. Reserve guard Matt Birkle (So., 6-2, Anacortes, Wa.) had five points, an assist and a steal as SPU scored the final 14 points of the period to go in front, 36-25.

Humboldt sliced the margin to 42-36 but Chivers scored four points on an 8-0 burst, restoring the lead to 14. Binetti (Jr., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) scored 11 of his points in the second half when SPU shot 58 percent (15-26). He also had four steals and combined with Lee to make 5 of 11 treys.

The Lumberjacks were held to a season low score, shooting just 40 percent. Grayson Moyer had 11 points. It was only their second home GNAC loss in four seasons.

SPU begins homecoming week by hosting Saint Martin's Wednesday night at 7.
