Western Oregon Upsets No. 8 Falcon Men, 61-59
January 27, 2005

Season and Game Stats

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Jan. 27) -- Western Oregon held No. 8-ranked Seattle Pacific University to its lowest scoring total in nearly seven years, dealing the Falcons a 61-59 loss in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game Thursday night.

Eric Orton drove for the go-ahead layup with 46 seconds to go and Kevin Tyner scored 18 points for the Wolves (5-3, 11-6), who nursed a slim lead throughout the second half to snap a four-game win streak by SPU (6-2, 14-4). However, the Falcons managed to maintain their slim lead in the GNAC due to Humboldt State's defeat of second-place Western Washington.

After shooting a season-best 62 percent in its last game, Seattle Pacific made just 43 percent from the field and committed 21 turnovers. Chad Williams (Jr., 6-8, Burlington, Wa.) paced the team with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Falcons trailed by 10 midway through the first half but rallied and eventually took their only lead at 36-34 on a Jordan Lee (Sr., 6-1, Tacoma, Wa./Life Christian) layup with 15:46 left.

But WOU retaliated several minutes later with six straight points, including a three-pointer by Dominique Deweese, to restore the lead to 49-42 with 8:19 remaining. SPU came back to knot the score at 57-all on a trey by Tony Binetti (Jr., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) and free throws by Williams and Dustin Bremerman (So., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower).

After Orton's made it 59-57, the Wolves forced a turnover with 10 seconds to go and Garrett Johnson made two free throws. Williams scored at the buzzer for Seattle Pacific.

Western Oregon shot just 40 percent from the field but was eight of 17 outside the arc and committed seven fewer turnovers.

The offensive output was the least since totaling 52 in an NCAA tournament loss toe UC Davis in 1998.

SPU, which has lost only twice in the last 14 games, visits Humboldt State Saturday night in Arcata, Ca.
