SPU Gymnasts Open Home Season With Narrow Loss to San Jose
January 21, 2005

Complete Meet Results

SEATTLE, Wa. (Jan. 21) -- Kari Kelly, Jaynie Reynolds and Debra Huss all finished atop the awards podium but it was not enough to overcome Greta Leach's winning all-around performance as Seattle Pacific University narrowly lost to San Jose State 190.500 to 190.850 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's gymnastics meet Friday night at Brougham Pavilion.

Leach tied with Kelly (Sr., Yakima, Wa.) with 9.675 on vault, and scored a 9.825 on balance beam to win both events. The sophomore from Santa Rosa, California danced a third place 9.700 on floor en route to her winning all-around total (38.725).

Narrowly bested by Leach, Huss (So., Orangevale, Ca.) managed silver in the all-around (38.625), tumbling her second 9.850 in as many weeks to win floor, and tying for second with teammate Sarah Sullivan (So., Salem, Or.) and the Spartans' Jennifer Greene on the uneven bars. Huss also negotiated the balance beam to a 9.750 second place tie with San Jose's Leah Bigelow.

Reynolds started off the night on vault with a third place tie with Sullivan and the Spartans' Michelle Minotti, each athlete earning 9.600. One rotation later, Reynolds swung a 9.725 to win the uneven bars.

The Falcons had a .25 lead heading into the final rotation, but San Jose mustered a 48.25, their best event performance of the night, to end the competition on beam. SPU churned out a 47.875 on floor for its top event performance.

With the win, San Jose State remains undefeated (2-0) while Seattle Pacific drops to 0-2 and tumbles next at the University of Washington on Jan. 28. Official start time is scheduled for 7PM. The Falcons return to Seattle on Feb. 12, to host Oregon State.
